Tom and Lorraine McDermott have volunteered at Our Lady of Mercy Community Outreach for 12 years. They met at Catholic University where they were both studying. Married for 54 years, they have four children and five grands scattered around the country. Tom spent most of his working years in the financial industry, Lorraine in health care. They fell in love with the Lowcountry and made Seabrook Island their home in 1999.
Both their parents and their faith taught them to give back so when they moved here they asked themselves “what now”. They first got involved with the Outreach teaching English as a Second Language Program. They were hooked by the stories they heard from those students (people who against all odds where working hard to make a better life).
They have both been involved in various projects over the years. Lorraine was chairperson of the Board of Directors for OLMCO for two years. Currently she helps manage the quilting project and mans the desk a couple of afternoons a month. Tom currently helps prepare people for the citizen exam and he is on the Development committee as he realizes the difficulty and importance of raising the money necessary to run this multifaceted organization.
In the beautiful world of Charleston and the barrier islands Lorraine and Tom realize how easy it is for the poor to become “invisible.” They have devoted their golden years to keeping that from happening.
