By The Town of Kiawah Island for The Island Connection
This fall, Berkeley Electric Cooperative (BEC) will be working on significant upgrades to the island’s electric infrastructure. These updates, which span most of the island, will replace old infrastructure and add capacity in areas where growth has outpaced the current grid’s reliability.
The most visible site will be from the intersection of Kiawah Island Parkway at Sora Rail to the intersection of Governor’s Dr. at Flyway Drive, where BEC will replace approximately five miles of infrastructure. This line is the spine of the island’s power, and upgrades to infrastructure in this area are essential to ensure future reliability. During the project, there will be crews along the roadside until the replacement is complete. While BEC will attempt to limit outages during this project, there may be times when that cannot be avoided.
BEC will communicate planned outages. Residents should ensure their contact information with BEC is correct to ensure advanced notice of an outage in their area. To update your information, visit berkeleyelectric.coop, log in to your Smart Hub app or call 1-800-327-9615.
