Local Non-profit Art Organizations Funded For 2021-22

By Martha Zink for The Island Connection

The mission of Arts etc. is to provide visual, performance and literary arts education to the youth of Johns and Wadmalaw Islands. Each year they fund local non-profit arts organization — our Program Partners — to bring selected programs to the schools. 2020 and 2021 presented challenges as many programs were put on hold due to Covid concerns. Unable to host the annual Art and House tour during 2020 and 2021, the organization has still been able to fund these programs for the coming year, with funding coming from Arts, etc. member sponsors, raffle ticket sales and grants. The selection process includes a detailed review of applications from each organization with follow-up communication to ensure the plans meet expectations. When the program dates are committed the funds are released.

Arts etc. has now committed financial support to the following Program Partners:

Chamber Music Charleston will bring live chamber music to Angel Oak, Mt. Zion and Edith L. Frierson elementary schools with two programs at each school. The “Classical Kids Concert” for children in grades K through 3 introduces instruments while the “Outreach Concert”for grades 4 and 5 focuses on historical elements of classical music. Both programs will share Margarita Engles’ story Dancing Hands: How Teresa Carreno Played the Piano for President Lincoln which has been adapted to music.

Children’s Opera.

Students from the College of Charleston will perform an opera based on a classic children’s story at the three elementary schools. Following each performance, the students have the opportunity to engage with the singers and learn more about the art and craft of producing an opera.

 Engaging Creative Minds.

Working with YEScarolina, ECM will conduct a six-week Arts Leadership program for twelve St. John’s High School students, building skills in leadership, entrepreneurship and financial literacy toward pursuing career and/or college pathways in the arts.

As a new Program Partner, ArtSmart will provide weekly, one-on-one voice lessons for up to 14 students at St. John’s High School. Taught by professional vocalists, these sessions also offer mentorship opportunities.

Charleston Jazz.

Also a new Program Partner, Charleston Jazz will partner with Angel Oak elementary school to offer weekly melodica instruction to 30 fourth and fifth-grade students in each of the fall and spring semesters. To further knowledge of the jazz style, there will also be an on-campus live performance by the Charleston Jazz Orchestra Ensemble during the school year.

Yo Art.

A third new Program Partner, Yo Art will teach the fundamentals of website design and coding at Frierson elementary school, and will expand the media arts/graphic design curriculum at Angel Oak elementary school.

In addition, there are four Program Partners who were unable to hold their programs during the 2020-2021 school year due to COVID related precautions. Funding for these programs has been held in escrow by Arts, etc. for the past year.

We are pleased that each is willing to proceed with their plans in the coming school year:

Dance Matters.

The Coming to Monuments program to be performed at St. John’s High School blends dance, theater and poetry to enhance social studies of the period from Reconstruction through the Civil Rights movement.

Halsey Institute of Contemporary Art.

A series of art-making and writing workshops inspired by the exhibit of the Swiss-Guinean photographer Namsa Leuba will be conducted at Edith L. Frierson elementary school.

Palmetto City Ballet.

Introducing the art of ballet and encouraging students to discover the joy of movement, the troupe will offer an in-school lecture and demonstration featuring performance excerpts from the ballet Cinderella at the Angel Oak elementary school.

PURE Theater.

The after-school improvisation theater education program will continue at Haut Gap middle school, helping students develop critical social and emotional learning skills including self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision making, and social awareness.

A total of $55,650 has been committed to these wonderful and varied programs. Arts, etc. appreciates the continuing support of members and sponsors which will make the forthcoming season possible.
