Kiawah Women’s Foundation Puts On Teen Holiday Project

By Marie Stephens for The Island Connection

The Kiawah Women’s Foundation (KWF) was started in August 2013 by Terry Weaver and Theresa Widuch.

It is a registered non-profit volunteer organization, designed exclusively for charitable purposes. The mission of the KWF is to provide services for children in underserved communities in the Low Country of South Carolina, specifically Johns and Wadmalaw Islands. KWF is supported by the hard work of many volunteers with our finances dedicated to projects providing nourishment for food insecure children. During the school year, our primary service is a weekly outreach program, called Backpack Buddies. The Backpack Buddies mission is to proactively combat Childhood Hunger. This program mainly serves children who live below the poverty level. These children attend Angel Oak Elementary and Haut Gap Middle School located on Johns Island, as well as Frierson Elementary located on Wadmalaw Island. Working with school personnel, the Backpack Buddies program makes available to these children snacks to take home for the weekend. These bags are lovingly filled each week by our volunteers and contain roughly 11 shelf stable foods which children can prepare on their own. The cost is approximately $5.00 per bag. Feedback from both the school community and parents has been positive in all regards. Another activity is our Teen Holiday project which serves 100 teens at Haut Gap Middle School and St. John’s High School. Each student receives a Holiday gift bag. The KWF is providing 100 teens from St Johns High School and Haupt Gap Middle School with gift bags again this Christmas and needs your help!! We will be shopping for Crocs but would like to add a toiletry bag and other small items to the gift bags. Below are ways you can be our elves while out doing your own shopping: Toiletries needed: Socks, deodorant, shampoo, lotion, toothbrushes, toothpaste, body wash, mouthwash, shaving cream, chapstick or other toiletries – any size Gift cards: $5 or $10 to McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Subway or Domino’s Donations are always appreciated. Make a check out to Kiawah Women’s Foundation and write “Teen” in the memo line.
