Get ready for a fun-filled Independence Day on Kiawah Island! Kiawah Resort and Night Heron Park will be offering several activities throughout the day on Sunday, July 4, starting with a free sand sculpting contest from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the end of boardwalk #5. Prizes will be awarded for the Most Patriotic and Most Creative sculptures, and judging will begin promptly at 12:30 p.m.
At 4:30 p.m., residents and guests are welcome to drop by and decorate their bikes for the parade at Sea Forest Drive near the East Beach Village. The parade will leave from this location at 5:15 p.m. and will be led by the Kiawah Island Fire Department, Uncle Sam and Betsy Ross. The route will continue down Sea Forest Drive and finish at Night Heron Park, where everyone is invited to join in the park’s complimentary annual Independence Day Festival. The Festival in the Park will begin when the parade concludes at 5:30 p.m. and will wrap up with a firework finale at 9:15 p.m. over the park’s soccer field. Enjoy beach music from The Headliners, tye dying, face painting, a children’s train, carnival games, amusement rides, and food and beverages which will be on sale until 9 p.m. Menu items include roasted oysters, hamburgers, hot dogs, corn dogs, mac & cheese, ribs, pulled pork, shrimp skewers, peel & eat shrimp, corn muffins, green beans, rice and watermelon.
If you feel like stepping away from the crowd for a bit, join some of the Night Heron naturalists for a fireworks adult twilight paddle from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. at Mingo Point. Kayakers will travel up the river as the sun sets and watch the fireworks display from the water.
Finally, for the kids and kids-at-heart who just aren’t ready to go to bed, an IndepenDANCE will be held at the Night Heron pool from 9:30 p.m. to 11 p.m. with a D.J. playing the hottest dance tunes.

Bike Parade road closures
On July 4, Sea Forest Drive will be closed to through traffic at the Sea Forest Drive/East Beach Village intersection from 4:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m. In addition, residents and guests in Mariners Watch and Windswept villas will experience temporary road delays between 5:15 p.m. – 5:45 p.m. For additional information, please contact the Heron Park Nature Center at 768-6001.
West Beach Guests are encouraged to ride the shuttle. The shuttle will operate from 5 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. departing from the roundabout at the Straw Market. Off-Island guests will be directed to park by festival officials and transportation will be available to take them to and from the festivities at Night Heron Park. East Beach guest parking will be available at the East Beach Conference Center within an easy walk to the park. However, transportation shuttles will be departing from the villa bell stand.
If your family is biking to the bike parade and festival, we do not encourage biking home after dark. Bikes may be locked up overnight in the park and transportation shuttles are available to the Straw Market in West Beach or the East Beach Conference Center.
