Folly Beach Challenge Triathlon Returns

Provided by Charleston County Parks and Recreation

Charleston area athletes, are you ready for a challenge? Charleston County Parks and Recreation Commission is hosting a beach triathlon with a twist. The Folly Beach Challenge, set for Saturday, October 20, is an exciting alternative to the traditional triathlon and a great competition for paddling enthusiasts. The Folly Beach Challenge features a 3 mile paddle, an 8.5 mile bike, and a 3 mile run on Folly Beach. Participants can compete individually or as one leg of a three-person team. Starting at 8:15 a.m., athletes will paddle the Folly River in their own kayak, then hit the sand on their bikes, and finish up with an ocean-side run on the beach.

Online registration for the Folly Beach Challenge Triathlon is now open, and will end on October 18. Late registration will take place on October 19 at packet pick-up, which will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Folly Beach Fishing Pier. Packet pickup will also be available on race day from 6:30-7:30 a.m. at the Folly Beach Fishing Pier. There is no registration available on race day. The race will be capped at 300 participants.

Registration for the Folly Beach Challenge is $44. Participants must be 16 or older and must furnish all necessary equipment to participate. Triathlon team registration is $92. Teams require three participants and one member must be at least 18 years of age. Awards will be presented at the Folly Beach Fishing Pier following the race.

It is recommended that participants bring shoes that can get wet and will stay on feet in the water, a swim suit or nylon shorts, sun protection including a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, a water bottle, and clothing for the anticipated weather conditions.
