Education Through Music

Wesley United Methodist Church on Johns Island will host a musical program aimed at educating local residents about Lowcountry spirituals and funeral songs Feb. 23. “Awakening of the Ancestors Through Music” begins at 4 p.m., and the event is open to the public. There is no admission charge. The program will provide opportunities to learn about ancestral musical history, its styles, meaning and purpose. Attendees will be able to participate and engage in dialogue throughout the program. The program is sponsored by the International African American Museum, the Gullah Geechee Cultural Heritage Corridor Commission, the Charleston County Public Library, The Progressive Club of Johns Island, Soulfully Creative Kids and Wesley United Methodist Church. The church is located at 2718 River Road.
