Dr. Edna DePaul had a successful dental practice in Mount Pleasant for 27 years. She is now sharing her talents and experience with those in need on the Sea Islands. Dr. DePaul was born in Pittsburgh, PA, where she lived until the age of 25.
She met her husband at the University of Pittsburgh, and they married in 1979. A year later, they both graduated from the School of Dental Medicine. In 1982, Dr. DePaul’s husband’s military career brought them to Charleston, where she opened her private practice in 1985. She sold her practice in 2012 to spend more time with her family.
Dr. DePaul and her husband enjoy traveling the world, as well as visiting their children in Nebraska and Greenville, SC. She also enjoys singing in her church choir and performing in nursing homes.
Dr. DePaul has known about Our Lady of Mercy Community Outreach’s dental clinic for years through the Dental Director, Dr. John Howard. When the timing was right and the opportunity arose, Dr. DePaul made the commitment to start volunteering at the Wellness Center.
“This is a place where I can practice clinical dentistry and educate dental students at the same time,” says Dr. DePaul. Not only do the dental services improve patients’ health, but they also boost their self-esteem.
Dr. DePaul shared a time when she was able to repair a patient’s chipped tooth. The patient thanked Dr. DePaul by giving her a big hug with tears of joy in her eyes.
Dr. DePaul encourages people to share in this rewarding experience by becoming a volunteer. “The staff and patients are appreciative and nice, which makes volunteering a joy!”
