Charleston Symphony Orchestra Offers Free Multimedia Presentation About Gustav Mahler and his Second Symphony

The CSO will be presenting a multimedia presentation about Gustav Mahler and his second symphony.

The Charleston Symphony Orchestra (CSO) will present a free, public event on Wednesday, April 18, 2012, at 5:00 p.m. at the Main Branch of the Charleston County Library, located at 68 Calhoun St., in downtown Charleston, SC. The event, titled Go Beyond the Music with Yuriy Bekker, will feature a multimedia presentation and musical demonstration about Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection,” which will be performed on April 21 by the CSO at Gaillard Auditorium. The event will be hosted by CSO Concertmaster and Artistic Advisor, Yuriy Bekker and is intended to engage listeners and enhance the concert experience.

Bekker will offer personal insight regarding the piece and the composer – who also once served as Music Director of the New York Philharmonic – as well as musical excerpts of the symphony as part of the demonstration. In fact, Mahler conducted the American premiere of his Second Symphony with the New York Philharmonic in Carnegie Hall. In addition, unique historical anecdotes about Gustav Mahler and his work will be discussed.

Bekker said, “Performing Mahler’s Second Symphony is a triumph and honor for the CSO. It will be such an amazing experience to witness the 240 performers on stage to contribute to the metaphor of our orchestra resurrecting. This symphony was one of the most successful symphonies that Mahler wrote in his lifetime.”

For more information about the event, interested parties may call the CSO at (843)723-7528.
