Staff Report for The Island Connection
The Charleston Symphony Orchestra Board of Directors recently elected Cindy Hartley as the President of the Board of Directors. She replaces outgoing President, Robert Schlau.
Hartley retired as Senior Vice President of Human Resources for Sonoco Products Company, a global packaging company. She currently serves on the boards of directors of South Carolina Bank and Trust, Coker College and the Preservation Society of Charleston.
“I am thrilled that Cindy has taken on this new role with the CSO,” said CSO Executive Director, Michael Smith. “She has fervor for excellence, an obvious passion for the symphony, and an enthusiasm that seems to be spreading amongst our Board of Directors as well as the Charleston community since her arrival. I’m very much looking forward to working with her, as we share a vision of the incredible possibilities that are ahead for the CSO.”
Hartley has been serving on the CSO Board since September 2012, most recently as First Vice President.
“There are so many positives happening with the Charleston Symphony Orchestra,” said Hartley. “We are building upon three years of solid financial results, our artistic programming is strong, our education offerings and outreach in the community are growing and our future overall has never looked brighter. I feel very fortunate to be in this role and part of the CSO family at this exciting juncture.”
In addition to Cindy Hartley, the Board voted in Edward Hart as a new director and as Vice President of Artistic Planning. Mr. Hart is Chair of the Department of Music at the College of Charleston. In his role on the Board, he will lead the Artistic Committee and work closely with CSO Acting Artistic Director and Concertmaster, Yuriy Bekker.
“I am delighted that Edward Hart will join the board of directors. Edward is an accomplished composer, great arts leader and a treasure in our community.
His musical knowledge will benefit our orchestra and I am so excited to collaborate with him,” said CSO concertmaster and Acting Artistic Director, Yuriy Bekker.
