The 9th annual Haygood/Grady Memorial Tennis Championship is being held this year on May 3-5th on Kiawah Island. The tournament is in honor and memory of Prinella Haygood who died from breast cancer at the age of 37.
Haygood was a former employee of the Kiawah Island Golf Resort. The annual event also honors Linwood Grady, a longtime resident of Kiawah, avid tennis player and instrumental in starting this tournament. He lost his battle with cancer is 2013.
Haygood left behind two young sons and Linwood left behind a wife and children who actively support the tournament.
The tournament is a SC Level 1 event sanctioned by USTA. Participation includes dinner on Saturday night prepared by Kiawah’s award winning chefs. There is also a silent auction with a wonderful selection of sought-after items. This year, the live auction will be hosted by Erin Kreinzle, ABC News 4 meteorologist and host of Lowcountry Live!
All proceeds from the auction are contributed in honor of Prinella Haygood and Linwood Grady to the Wellness Center at Roper St. Francis Cancer Care Center, as well as the education trust for Haygood’s sons. Atendees will also continue to celebrate the life of Michelle Nemeth by donating to the Lonon Foundation, a non-profit that provides resources to children who have been affected by a family or caregiver’s cancer diagnosis.
Haygood, Grady, and Nemeth had ties to Kiawah and the surrounding tennis communities and are fondly remembered by all of us involved in tennis.
