Plein Air Magazine’s Grand Salon Winner, Stewart White, conducted a two-day workshop for Todd & Huff Art Center on Oct.22 and 23. White, from Baltimore, Maryland, works in watercolor and oil. His unique handling of oil paint is developed from his watercolor background. White brings his job as an architectural illustrator and designer, as well as his painting experience to develop his technique in oil medium to paint with beautiful transparent passages.
White demonstrated washes in watercolor and oil as well as developing paintings in each medium. His deft use of both mediums allows paintings to maintain light areas, which sing against darker passages. Oil medium is used more thinly to maintain the original washes. Oil in light values is applied first, which is like watercolor application, and darker values are built up after the light areas are defined.
Participants worked in both mediums, or only one medium of their choice. White also taught use of everyday objects for paint application such as a shaving brush, and easy drawing tips for figures, cars, horses, and cows.
Todd & Huff Art Center has released its 2019 workshop schedule with notable artists, Qiang Huang in January, Gary Bodner in March, Colin Page in April, Alice Williams in September, and Shelby Keefe in November. Pat Huff also teaches oil classes, beginning through advanced on Wednesdays and Thursdays at the Art Center at Bohicket Marina. Class subjects, to name a few, have included, “Only Palette Knife,” “Finding Your Artistic Voice,” “Painting the Figure in the Landscape,” and “Brushstrokes, Techniques and Supports.”
