Staff Report for The Island Connection
Gary Bowers was born and grew up in the North West of England. He obtained his BSc in Chemistry at Surrey University and a PhD in Analytical Chemistry/Biochemistry at Kings College, University of London. Gary started his career in Drug Metabolism at Pfizer in the UK and then moved to Glaxo Group Research. In 1996, he relocated to the US, with GlaxoWellcome, based in RTP, NC where he continued to be involved in the research and development of novel drugs. He personally contributed to the scientific understanding of more than 10 marketed new medicines, including treatments for cancer, asthma and HIV. Now semi-retired, Gary blends his time between tennis, golf, therapy dog Scampi, scientific consulting and working in a local golf shop. Bowers’ interest in photography was sparked during a safari trip to Kenya in the early 90s. More recently, he considers himself fortunate to have been able to photograph wildlife in Botswana with the aid of guides. With no formal training in photography, membership in the Seabrook Island Photography Club provides a wonderful opportunity to build his knowledge and experience. Bowers’ photos will be on display at the Lake House during January and February.
