By Patricia Huff for The Island Connection
Wisconsin native, Shelby Keefe, will give a plein air oil workshop for Todd & Huff Art Center on September 18, 19 and 20 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Painting venues will be in downtown Charleston with one day spent indoors. Indoor location, also to be used in case of inclement weather, is at Our Savior Church on Betsy Kerrison Parkway.
Keefe’s style is bold, expressive, exuberant and painted in full color. She has won numerous plein air competitions and travels extensively to paint plein air. Her subject matter is as varied as the landscape. Her cityscapes are descriptive of the sites as well as having wonderful character. She imbues each of her paintings with great compositional skills that pull the viewer into the scene.
Keefe’s workshop will concentrate on how to simplify the detail in painting plein air and expressing the essence of a scene. Compositional uniqueness and applying complementary colors as an underpainting will also be emphasized.
Demonstrations and one-on-one help will be conducted each day.
Painting on location adds an extra element to understanding painting cityscapes and having the opportunity to paint on location with Keefe at the easel will be a wonderful experience and opportunity. She was an invited teacher at the Plein Air Exposition in Sante Fe, NM in April 2018 and demonstrated her underpainting technique, which she will be teaching at the Johns Island workshop.
Other notable artists that will be teaching workshops for the Todd & Huff Art Center are Stewart White, October 22 and 23 2018; Qiang Huang, January 22-24, 2019; Gary Bodner, March 12-14; Colin Page, April 8-10; and Alice Williams, September 24-26, 2019.
