Staff Report for The Island Connection
The 8th annual Haygood/Grady Memorial Tennis Championship is being held this year May 18-20 on Kiawah Island. The tournament is in honor and memory of Prinella Haygood who died from breast cancer at the age of 37. She was a former employee of the Kiawah Island Golf Resort. It is also in honor and memory of Linwood Grady, a longtime resident of Kiawah, avid tennis player, and instrumental in starting this tournament. He lost his battle with cancer is 2013.
Prinella left behind two young sons and Linwood left behind a wife and children who actively support the tournament.
The tournament is a SC Level 2 event sanctioned by the USTA. Participation includes dinner on Saturday night prepared by Kiawah’s award-winning chefs. There is also a silent auction with a wonderful selection of sought-after items. This year’s auction will be hosted by Tom Crawford, meteorologist for local ABC news channel 4.
All proceeds from the auction are contributed in honor of Prinella Haygood and Linwood Grady to the Wellness Center at Roper St. Francis Cancer Care Center, as well as the education trust for Prinella’s sons. In addition, this year the are celebrating the life of Michele Nemeth by donating to the Lonon Foundation, a nonprofit that provides resources to children who have been affected by a family or caregiver’s cancer diagnosis.
Prinella, Linwood, and Michelle had ties to Kiawah and the surrounding tennis communities and are fondly remembered by all of us involved in tennis.
