Throughout his career, Dr. James Commette always gave back to his local community and globally through gratuitous dentistry. Even after his retirement, he continues to make a difference by volunteering at Our Lady of Mercy Community Outreach’s Wellness Center.
Dr. Commette was born and raised in Beverly, MA. In 1966, he obtained a degree in biology from the College of the Holy Cross. Dr. Commette went on to attend Harvard School of Dental Medicine where he received the Dr. Norman B. Nesbett Award for excellence in clinical dentistry. Afterwards, he completed a three-year residency in Los Angeles.
Dr. Commette started his dental career with the Veterans Administration for 15 years before going into private practice.
For the next 30 years, he grew his Boston based practice to include three partners and seven associates. Through his private practice, Dr. Commette and his wife would spend their weekends providing pro bono dental work to local people in need. He also participated in dental mission trips to Guatemala.
Six years ago, Dr. Commette retired and moved to Charleston. Looking for volunteer opportunities, he did some online research and reached out to Dr. John Howard, Dental Clinic Director.
“I look forward to my volunteer days,” says Dr. Commette. “I like the people, patients and staff.” He provides all patients with education on preventative dental measures.
Dental services at the Wellness Center are offered Monday through Thursday by appointment and Tuesday evenings on an emergency basis. The patients are appreciative of the services they receive.
“Volunteering at Our Lady of Mercy Community Outreach is very gratifying,” says Dr. Commette. He encourages others to volunteer as well and to make an impact in someone’s life.
