The Haygood/Grady Memorial Tennis and Golf Championships are being held this year on May 19-21, 2017 on Kiawah Island and Oak Point Golf Course.

The tournaments are in honor of the memory of Prinella Haygood who died from breast cancer at age 37 and Linwood Grady who tragically also lost his battle with cancer in 2013. Haygood’s hope and smiles inspired everyone who knew her and worked with her at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort. Grady was a longtime resident of Kiawah Island and was instrumental in starting this tournament.

Haygood came to the US from her native South Africa in 2003 with her husband, John. It didn’t take long for her to make a home and a mark in her new community and the Kiawah Island Golf Resort where she was a beloved employee.

She was diagnosed with breast cancer in September 2009, and fought with courage and great hope, but succumbed to the advanced disease in just over a year. Haygood leaves a legacy of strength, humor and warmth to the Kiawah community and to her two young sons.

Grady was the co-owner of Grady Ervin & Company men’s clothing store on King Street. He was married to his wife Judy for 44 years, and they have two daughters and three grandchildren. He was a member of the Roper St. Francis Foundation Board and diligently worked to raise money for the Roper St. Francis Cancer Care. The Tennis tournament is a SC Level 2 event sanctioned by the USTA.

Participation includes dinner on Saturday night (enjoy a four-course buffet dinner prepared by Kiawah’s award-winning chefs) and a lively and exciting silent and live auction.

All proceeds of the auction are contributed in honor of Prinella Haygood and Linwood Grady to the Wellness Center at Roper St. Francis Cancer Care and an education trust for Haygood’s two young sons. In 2016, Haygood/Grady was able to donate $17,500 to the Roper St. Francis Cancer Care.

The Wellness Center is supported solely by private funds and provides many services to those undergoing cancer treatment at the Roper St. Francis Cancer Care Center. These services include telemedicine capabilities, financial help and advice, legal guidance, music, art, computer opportunities and general nurturing.
